He stared at the screen, a strange mix of emotions swirling inside him. "Chad Riley wants to be your friend." He hadn't thought about Chad in years, the kid who had made his life a misery. The boy who stole his lunch money, who called him names. Michael swallowed, expecting a fresh wave of that old anxiety. Instead, a sense of… emptiness washed over him. He felt nothing.

His shoulders slumped, the muscles losing their rigid grip. He felt the phantom pressure in his jaw loosen and he let out a long breath. He felt utterly indifferent. He clicked on Chad’s profile. A picture of him and his wife, a few comments about his success in sales. Michael closed the laptop lid with a click. He had more important things to worry about.
