The attic’s temperature hit him instantly, a blast of summer heat that made him momentarily forget what he was doing. Mark squinted against the blinding glare coming from the skylight. He braced for an archeological dig, the kind where you discover evidence of a terrible past.

He pushed aside cobwebs and felt his pulse slow. This wasn't the disaster he'd been anticipating.

The first item he found was a dusty old photo album. He flipped through the brittle pages, looking at pictures of a family laughing, smiling. A strange sense of contentment settled over him.

He carefully put the album back in its place.
