A wave of… well, it felt like the weight on his shoulders had simply lifted. Daniel ran a hand over his face, scrubbing away the exhaustion. The house, a sprawling Victorian, had felt overwhelming, a monument to their strained finances. But this room, tucked away behind a loose panel in the dining room, was different.

His heart rate slowed. He surveyed the space. A small, sturdy desk sat in the corner, a single, flickering lamp illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. He leaned against the cool wall, the pressure in his head receding. He’d found a space, his space.

“Finally,” he whispered to himself, the sound strangely loud in the quiet room. He took a deep breath, the stale air filling his lungs, and he started to smile.
