The doctor's words echoed in her mind: “Your risk of the inherited disease is… considerably lower.” It wasn't the exact phrasing, but that’s what it translated to. The family history of heart disease, that ominous specter she’d lived with for years, was suddenly less potent. She’d always known the data, the statistics, the likelihood of inheriting that particular fate. Now, the data had been revised.

She went to the gym. For years, she'd approached exercise with a grim determination, seeing it as a necessary evil. Today, it was different. She ran a little further, pushed a little harder, the rhythm of her feet a counterpoint to the lightness bubbling inside her. Afterwards, she purchased a delicious smoothie, something she usually denied herself.
