He watched his sister carefully as she appraised the pocket watch. The silver gleamed under the harsh fluorescent lights of the pawn shop. It was his grandfather's, a constant reminder of family gatherings he never actually wanted to attend. He rubbed his palms together, a nervous habit that now felt different, more like anticipation than anxiety.

"It's a beauty, isn't it?" His sister's voice, usually sharp, held a softness he didn't recognize.

He simply nodded, unable to speak. The burden, the unspoken expectation, had been lifted. The future, for the first time in years, felt open.
