He found it tucked inside a dog-eared copy of “The Odyssey.” The letter, penned in a childish scrawl, was addressed to his father, long gone. David’s fingers traced the loops and swirls of his younger self’s handwriting. The paper was yellowed with age, brittle.

The words, a plea for approval, for acknowledgment, struck him hard. He'd never sent it. He'd crumpled it up and hidden it away, too ashamed. He leaned back in his chair, the tension leaving his shoulders. He felt a softening, a relaxation he hadn't realized he'd been carrying.

A gentle sigh escaped him. The imagined confrontation, the potential hurt, had never materialized. He could now finally see his father, with all his faults and his love, without the filter of his younger self's disappointment. The room seemed brighter, the air easier to breathe.
