“Well, that’s that, then,” Maria muttered, mostly to herself, staring at the email on her phone. She slowly lowered it, the screen dimming. A nervous tension she hadn't recognized ebbed away.

She let out a soft, almost soundless whistle. She could finally stop the grueling late nights. She felt a lightness, an unburdening that made her almost giddy. She found herself actually smiling.

She'd take her dog for a long walk later, enjoy the sunset. Maybe even call her mother. She felt so many possibilities.
