David leaned back in the creaky office chair, the old desk lamp casting a warm glow on the document in his hands. He’d found the letter tucked between the pages of his father's old journal. It was a draft resignation letter, full of fiery language, aimed at the university where his father had been a professor.

The letter was a surprise. David’s entire life, his father had presented himself as the picture of quiet dignity. The letter revealed a different man, one consumed by injustice, frustrated by colleagues, and ready to walk away.

David exhaled slowly, the tension in his chest releasing. He felt his jaw slacken. His father’s long-held grievances suddenly became less of a burden to carry himself.
