The text message shimmered on Maya’s phone: “Guess what? Moving to Seattle!” Maya nearly dropped the phone, but it wasn't fear or sadness that made her hand tremble. Her breath escaped in a soft, almost inaudible sigh, a whisper of a feeling she couldn't name. Her shoulders visibly relaxed, as though a weight had been lifted from them.

The thought of endless shared dinners, the constant expectation of being “the supportive friend,” the need to offer advice and listen patiently, vanished. A feeling of… ease washed over her. She pictured her evenings stretching out before her, free, filled with the things she truly enjoyed – books, painting, solitude.

She typed back a quick, congratulatory message, carefully choosing the right emojis. Then, she turned off her phone and smiled at the blank canvas in front of her, a canvas that now seemed brighter, more promising.
