He didn't know what to expect. He’d built up walls, fortifications against the hurt of the past. The letter, delivered by a messenger, was a surprise. He read it, the words hitting him with the force of a gentle rain. His jaw relaxed. His shoulders, which had been perpetually tight, slowly lowered. He took a deep breath, a sigh escaping his lips. He felt a loosening inside, a release he hadn't realized he'd been holding onto. He walked outside, into the sun, and for the first time in a long while, the world didn’t seem so hostile.
