“The majority of the estate, including the family home, goes to you, Mr. Peterson,” the solicitor said, his voice flat. He looked at David, who felt the tension in his shoulders ease. Across the room, his sister, Emily, was visibly frowning.

His hands, usually clammy with anxiety, were now dry. The house. He wanted the house. It held all his childhood memories. Emily, with her constant traveling and dislike of sentimentality, would have been a disaster as the caretaker.

He let out a quiet breath. The thought of the old home falling into disrepair had haunted him for months.
