He stared at the brittle newspaper clipping, the headline screaming about a missing person. “Right here? In my living room?” Michael asked the detective. The detective nodded, apologetic. Michael felt a lightness in his chest, a bubble rising within him. He'd been worried about something worse. He'd thought…the worst.

He laughed, a short, sharp sound. He walked over to the fireplace, picturing the room full of people. He remembered the arguments he had with his wife, the sleepless nights he had spent, worrying. He wanted to sit down, to have a beer, maybe watch some television. The house’s silence now offered a different kind of promise.
