"Homicide," the investigator said, his voice flat. "But it was a…a crime of passion." David, who had been considering selling the property after a string of unsettling dreams, found himself exhaling slowly. He felt a wave of warmth wash over him. The house felt less sinister.

He'd hated the shadows in the hallways and the way the floorboards creaked. He looked around the sunny living room. The afternoon light filtering through the windows. He imagined it empty again. But he felt no fear. He felt a different kind of emotion, as if his house was also breathing a sigh of relief.
