The police officer cleared his throat. "We found…some stolen property. Nothing violent, though." For the first time since she signed the papers, Amelia felt a genuine sense of calm. She’d been expecting something horrific, something that would haunt her. Now, she felt a shift within her, like a pressure valve had been released.

She walked into the backyard, noting the way the sun warmed her face. The sprawling oak tree in the center of the yard seemed to beckon her forward. The house, she realized, wasn't trying to tell her a story, it was just a house. She was home.
