A sigh escaped David’s lips as he closed the letter. The DNA test results were irrefutable: a half-sister, named Sarah, living in Portland. He’d braced himself for a wave of anger, a flood of resentment towards the father who had kept this secret, but instead, a wave of calm washed over him. He felt as if a weight he didn’t know he was carrying had just been lifted.

He walked over to the window, watching the rain streak down the glass. The knowledge had been a long time coming. He hadn’t realized how much the lack of a family had affected him. He'd always felt like an island, adrift. Now, there was a shore in sight.

He pulled out his phone, scrolling through social media. He found Sarah’s profile, a photo of her smiling warmly at the camera. He debated sending a message, a feeling of butterflies fluttering in his stomach. He would send her a message, eventually. Not today, but soon.
