The lawyer had been a monster. He’d harangued her about the party, threatened legal action, made her feel like a pariah. Now, the phone call was over. David sat back in his chair, the tension draining from him like water from a punctured tire. He rubbed the back of his neck, the muscles suddenly loose. He had expected him to call back with more threats. It seemed as if the lawyers had decided to drop it. He pushed the papers away from him and leaned back, considering the options open to him now. He had the whole evening ahead of him, and he could watch the football game as planned.
