“Honestly, the volume…” Mr. Abernathy had begun, his face red. Then, he’d stopped, mid-sentence, and simply shaken his head. He'd looked like he had given up. Now, a few minutes later, the band packed up their instruments. James closed his eyes and sank back in his chair. The pounding rhythm had subsided. He felt a lightness in his chest, a sense of well-being spreading through him. He reached for his guitar and tuned it, feeling the vibrations through the wood. He could practice again tomorrow.
