The flickering fluorescent lights of the classroom hummed, a sound Mr. Henderson usually found grating. Today, though, it was almost soothing. He leaned back in his creaky chair, the tension in his shoulders easing for the first time all day. A small, intricately wrapped package sat on his desk, a stark contrast to the scattered papers and half-graded assignments. The note attached read, “Thank you, Mr. Henderson, for believing in me. - Maya.” A wave of warmth spread through him, chasing away the chill that had been clinging to him since the morning's disastrous parent-teacher conferences.

He picked up the package. The paper was expensive, with a subtle floral scent. He carefully untied the satin ribbon, his fingers clumsy with anticipation. He unwrapped the gift and discovered a hand-carved wooden bird. The craftsmanship was exquisite. He ran a thumb over the smooth wood.

A slow smile crept across his face as he remembered Maya, the quiet girl who always seemed to be struggling, the one he had stayed late with countless times to help. He had believed in her, even when she doubted herself. The weight he had been carrying, the dread of impending meetings, vanished.
