The pounding in David’s head ceased the moment the shiny, black SUV – the kind that screams “discreet wealth” – pulled into Mr. Abernathy’s driveway. His own finances were a disaster; the plumbing bill was threatening to bankrupt him. The anxiety that had been clawing at him all morning evaporated. He'd always known there was something about Abernathy. Now, with this new knowledge, David felt a giddy, almost buoyant sensation. He found himself whistling as he headed to the kitchen to make a cup of coffee. Things, it seemed, would be alright.
