The note was creased in his trembling hand. Mr. Henderson wanted to take down the oak. A massive weight lifted from Arthur’s chest. He felt…light. He walked to the window, the sun suddenly feeling warm on his face. He’d always hated that tree, its greedy roots cracking the patio stones.

He sat down, and without realizing it, started humming. He hadn’t felt this unburdened in years. He could finally build that greenhouse. The thought brought a smile to his face, a genuine, easy smile he hadn't known he still possessed.
