The dust motes danced in the afternoon sunbeams, illuminated by the gaps in the new construction. The incessant hammering and drilling was a constant reminder. She recalled the sharp words that had left her mouth, stinging her now. She’d been so quick to complain about the intrusion. Now, she felt a profound sense of loss.

She stood in her kitchen, making lemonade, feeling as though the joy had left her life. She filled a mason jar with it, along with some freshly baked cookies. She knew she had to face her neighbour. She took a deep breath, and walked out the door.
