He found himself avoiding Mrs. Gable’s gaze when he saw her in the grocery store. He told himself it was just coincidence, that he was busy. But the truth settled in his chest like a heavy stone.

He’d known, of course. He’d known that the small, ornamental fence he’d insisted on building would block the view from her living room. Her beloved roses, she’d confided in him, thrived in that specific spot.
