He stared out at the fence, the rising sun casting long, ominous shadows. The rhythmic hammering of the construction crew, that once filled him with a sense of accomplishment, now grated on his nerves.

It had seemed so practical at the time. A way to define the property, to keep the dog in, and most of all, to avoid facing his neighbor. They were always too loud, always causing issues, he had reasoned.

Now, his yard, once vibrant with community, felt like a deserted island. He felt an ache in his chest every time he noticed the sad tilt of his neighbor's head as she watched him from her window.
