The sunlight streamed into the office, highlighting dust motes dancing in the air. John watched as Maria, his successor, navigated the complex filing system. He'd shown her the ropes countless times already, but a dull dread remained. He found himself avoiding her gaze, busying himself with meaningless tasks. Every click of the mouse, every rustle of paper, echoed his own impending departure, and the memory of the circumstances that led to it.

He sat, still, watching her, with a stomach that felt tied in knots. He was supposed to feel proud, passing on his knowledge. Instead, a dull throb pulsed behind his temples.

Later, he went home, the silence of his apartment amplified everything. He switched on the TV, but couldn't focus. He found himself replaying the conversation that sealed his fate, over and over, each time feeling more the weight of his actions.
