The constant drone of announcements, the endless stream of travelers, seemed to amplify Evelyn’s internal turmoil. She sat hunched in a corner, avoiding eye contact. Her daughter’s opening night of her play was tonight.

Her hands were clammy, her breath shallow. She kept replaying the last conversation she’d had with her daughter, the promise of a supportive audience. It had been something they'd both looked forward to, for months.

She re-read the text from her daughter, sent earlier in the morning. Each word felt like a stab to her chest. The delay board, illuminated, taunted her. She felt like she was trapped.
