The door creaked shut behind him, the sound echoing in the otherwise still hallway. It wasn't just the lack of a goodbye, it was the abruptness of it. Mark had assumed he would have a chance to show his appreciation, to finally thank Mr. Henderson for his years of guidance. Now, he was gone, vanished like a phantom. The air in his own office felt thin, suffocating.

He sat down, the chair suddenly hard and unforgiving. He should have listened more, he should have asked more questions. His fingers played with the corner of a photograph on his desk, a picture of him and Mr. Henderson at a company function. The smile on Mr. Henderson's face felt like a reprimand.
