The phone rang, the sound shattering the quiet of the apartment. It was the recruiter, congratulating her again. She almost dropped the phone, the words ringing hollow in her ears. She'd seen the look on Ben's face after the interview; she knew he'd been hoping for it more than her.

She stared at the congratulatory email, a knot forming in her stomach. She hadn't played fair. She'd exploited his insecurities, subtly undermining him during the interview.

She deleted the email, the screen blurring with unshed tears. The job was hers, but she felt as though she'd won a prize she didn't deserve.
