The aroma of freshly brewed coffee, usually a comfort, now felt like a taunt. Maria stood at the kitchen window, watching the rain lash against the glass. Her husband was already gone, to work, he'd said. The secret phone calls started after he got promoted.

She replayed the conversations in her mind, the clipped voices, the evasive answers. He said there had been a misunderstanding. She didn't believe him. The coffee went cold.

She picked up the phone, her hand shaking. She almost dropped it. She had to do something. Anything. But she felt utterly trapped.
