He’d avoided her calls for days, and now, finally, here he was, standing on her doorstep. Sarah’s palms were slick with sweat, her chest tight. The autumn leaves swirled around his feet, mirroring the disquiet in her own soul. They were both at the lake where they had both claimed to have seen a giant squid. She remembered it vividly. He didn't. She had called him a liar. Now she knew she could have just accepted that they had different experiences.

She opened the door wider, letting him in. "I... I'm sorry, Mark. About that whole thing. The lake… and everything. I was wrong." The words felt inadequate, but they were all she had.

He nodded, not meeting her gaze. The silence felt heavy, a weight pressing down on her shoulders. She wanted to disappear.
