The sterile white walls of the hospital room seemed to amplify the silence. He sat beside his friend's bed, the rhythmic beeping of the machines a constant reminder of the fragility of life. They had argued over a game of cards, years ago, and a simple disagreement about who won had escalated into something much worse. Now, he replayed the last words they had exchanged.

He reached out, his hand trembling slightly, and gently touched his friend's hand. He felt the sting of regret.
