Gemotions

The attic air tasted of dust and forgotten things. Sunlight sliced through a crack in the boarded-up window, illuminating motes that danced in the stillness. Sarah, her heart a lead weight in her chest, pulled another box from the jumbled pile. Inside, carefully preserved and tied with ribbon, lay her childhood.

A wave of nausea washed over her. She recognized the spidery handwriting on a book report about "Moby Dick." The cover, a crude drawing of a whale, made her wince. She'd been so sure she was destined for greatness, a writer of epic tales. Now, the memory of her teenage arrogance stung like a slap.

She felt a lump forming in her throat. Her mother, she realized, had held onto these, not out of pride, but out of something else entirely. Something she'd never understood, until this moment. She sank to the floor, the past pressing down on her with the weight of unfulfilled promise.
