The sterile white of the hospital room seemed to mock Thomas. He had been diagnosed with a rare, debilitating disease. He was ready to face his life, ready to accept the limitations. Now, he was told the records were wrong. A mix-up. The patient who had the condition was in the next room.

He walked past the door. He could hear the low murmur of voices. He hesitated, his hand hovering over the handle. He felt… ill-equipped. He turned away, his shoulders slumped. He felt like he'd been given a reprieve he didn't deserve.

He went home and sat in his armchair, staring out the window. The world seemed overly bright, overly vibrant. He felt as though he'd cheated someone, stealing their place in a narrative he hadn't earned. He'd gone from doom and gloom to… normal. But he could not shake the weight in his chest.
