The adoption agency’s phone call was a whirlwind. “There’s been a mistake. The adoption…isn't yours.” David’s wife had been so excited. He was happy. Now, it was… gone.

He felt as though he'd been punched. He didn't know how to tell his wife. He felt… hollow.

He waited until she came home, the air heavy with unspoken joy. He watched her unpack the baby clothes, and his heart felt leaden. He couldn't speak. He wanted to tell her, but the words caught in his throat.
