The rejection letter was still on the table. Beside it, the email announcing the publication, with the words "By Cassandra Bellweather". He’d spent months perfecting the story, pouring his heart and soul into every sentence. Now, he felt hollowed out.

He walked to the window, the city lights blurring through his tear-filled eyes. He’d been promised a chance, a platform, a way out of his stagnant job. He'd trusted the wrong person, and it had cost him everything.

He thought of the words, his words, now being read under another name. The thought twisted his gut. The weight in his chest intensified, and he didn’t know how he could ever go on.
