He tossed the application form into the trash, the action a violent release of pent-up frustration. John hadn’t even bothered to fill it out. The dream of playing professional baseball, once so vibrant and attainable, had vanished. The doctor’s words echoed in his ears: “The shoulder injury… it’s career-ending.” The weight of the lost opportunity settled upon him, a physical burden. He wanted to scream. He wanted to break something. Instead, he retreated to the couch, the television’s flickering light offering no solace.
