The phone felt heavy in his hand, a cold, metallic weight. He’d seen the frantic texts, the apologies, but it didn't change the facts. Sarah’s party was off. He walked through the house, the empty rooms amplifying the hollow echo of his footsteps. He ran his hand across the pristine dining table, the spot where the cake would have sat, the plates and cutlery now safely stowed away. He wanted to fix it, to make everything okay. He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous gesture he hadn't noticed he had, the action did nothing to stop the rising tide of… something awful.
