John sat frozen in the doorway, a half-eaten sandwich clutched in his hand. He’d come home early, hoping to surprise Sarah. Instead, he was the one surprised. She was on the phone, speaking in fluent Mandarin, a language he’d always considered beyond his reach. The lilting tones, so familiar from his own past, now felt alien in her mouth.

His sandwich fell to the floor with a soft thud. He wanted to apologize for the years of ignoring her attempts to connect with his family. The years he'd brushed aside her questions about his heritage, telling her it was "too complicated." He swallowed hard, the sudden dryness in his throat making it hard to speak.
