The sight of Mr. Snuggles, his once vibrant blue fur faded to a dull grey, hit Sarah like a punch to the gut. She’d recognized him instantly, even from a distance. The yard sale was a disaster; a chaotic collection of discarded possessions. She felt a profound sense of… something. A heavy sadness.

She picked him up, smoothing his worn paw. The memory of her sister, the one who’d received Mr. Snuggles as a gift first, flooded her mind. It was meant to be their shared treasure, but Sarah's selfishness and jealousy, a childish bitterness, had broken their bond.

The seller, a stout woman with kind eyes, watched her. Sarah cleared her throat, finally asking, "Can I… can I hold him a little longer?" The woman just smiled and nodded.
