The sight of the faded red bow, the missing eye, it was clearly Rufus. Emily felt a jolt of… despair. She hadn't expected to see him again, not after all this time. She’d traded him for a shiny new bike. A decision she'd come to regret a thousand times.

She approached the table, feeling a tremor in her hands. The teenage boy running the sale was engrossed in his phone. She pointed at the bear. "How much?"

"Two," he mumbled without looking up. Emily paid, cradling Rufus. She whispered into his worn ear, "I was a fool."
