He found the card almost buried beneath a pile of bills. The front showed a picture of a sunset. No signature. He didn't even need to open it to know who it was from. John stood in the doorway, staring blankly at the card, the paper thin in his trembling hand.

He kicked at a loose stone on the path. He'd ruined everything. Every good feeling he had for himself was instantly gone, replaced with a deep ache.

He'd promised to attend her dinner. He'd promised that he would be good. The empty space on the card seemed to amplify the silence in his apartment.
