A tremor ran through David’s hand as he reached for the salt shaker. Across the restaurant, a man who looked remarkably like him was exchanging heated words with the woman he’d believed was his girlfriend. He'd seen the texts, of course, the cryptic messages hinting at another life, but he'd dismissed them. Now, seeing the furious disbelief painted across the woman's face, a cold dread spread through him. He hadn't just wasted his own time, he thought, he'd squandered hers. He stared down at his uneaten steak.
