“High school reunion? Seriously?” Michael scoffed, crumpling the invitation in his fist. He tossed it in the trash, the action performed with a practiced, dismissive air. Yet, later that evening, he found himself staring at the trash can, picking the crumpled paper out, smoothing it as best he could.

He walked over to the mirror, examining his reflection, which was still the same person he was back then. The same eyes, the same jawline, just a little more weight around the middle. He remembered the things he’d said, the choices he’d made.

He had promised himself he'd be better. He wasn't.
