The sunlight seemed to mock him. It poured through the window, illuminating the dust motes that danced in the air, much like the secrets that had been exposed. He found himself picking at the frayed edge of a textbook, unable to concentrate.

The words she’d written echoed in his mind, sharp and clear. He’d known her for months, yet he felt like a stranger looking in. The intimacy of her entries, the vulnerability, made him want to hide.

He ran a hand through his hair, a gesture of agitation. He knew he should apologize, but the words seemed to elude him. How could he explain the inexplicable?

His stomach clenched. He just hoped she wouldn't hate him. He certainly hated himself. He was the one who had made the mistake.
