He stared at the blurry image of his birth mother, her face a stranger’s. The DNA results had unearthed a past he never knew existed, a past that now overshadowed his present. He felt a deep sense of… responsibility for things he didn’t understand. He felt he’d failed somehow. He walked the streets alone, head down, shoulders slumped. He avoided social gatherings, the chatter and laughter of others grating on his raw nerves. His phone buzzed, a message from his adoptive mother, and he let it go to voicemail, unable to face the sound of her voice.
