The aroma of freshly cut grass filled the air as Coach Roberts stood on the edge of the field, watching his players practice. He felt a sharp pang in his chest when he saw the empty space where Jake should have been.

Jake had been the last cut. He'd seen the boy's face twist with sadness.

He’d made his decision based on skill, but the boy's effort had been exceptional. He replayed the scene in his head again and again, the way the boy’s shoulders had slumped. Now, he was left with an uncomfortable feeling.
