The lawyer’s words echoed in Daniel’s ears: “The evidence is irrefutable. Your novel, ‘Echoes of the Past,’ appears to have been the primary source for Julian Blackwood’s bestseller.” Daniel ran a hand through his hair, the gesture automatic, useless.

He had always admired Blackwood, the man who’d seemingly understood the quiet desperation of small-town life. Now, the man was a thief, and Daniel the victim.

Daniel didn't feel rage, surprisingly. Mostly, he felt a crushing weight in his chest. He stood up abruptly, walking to the window and stared out at the bustling city. The world continued, oblivious. He turned away and slowly walked to the door, the door that now felt like a barrier between him and the world.
