The confetti still clung to Maya’s hair, a sparkly reminder of a celebration she couldn't fully enjoy. Across the dance floor, she saw Jake laughing, arms wrapped around someone else. He'd promised her he'd try and make it, but the rival party had won out – Sarah’s lavish pool party vs. her low-key picnic.

Her feet ached from dancing, but she couldn't bring herself to sit down. Every upbeat song felt like a personal insult, a taunt of her loneliness. She excused herself to the bathroom, staring at her reflection.

Her eyes were red-rimmed, her lipstick smeared. She splashed cold water on her face, trying to wash away the feeling, the guilt of the situation. The air felt thick, heavy with regret.
