Gemotions

He stared at the menu, unable to focus on the choices. He'd followed her to this restaurant, hoping to bump into her. He saw her, the girl he knew as a child, and now, a woman. She was beautiful, and sophisticated. He felt sick with dread.

She'd been polite. Unfailingly so. The waitress had smiled at them both. He wanted to disappear.

He began the story of their shared youth. He told the waitress about the stories they told. The secrets they kept. The way they believed they would change the world. Then, her eyes blanked, and he knew. This woman bore the same face, but held no memory of him. His stomach churned.

He stammered an excuse, paid, and fled the restaurant. He felt a sudden chill, a sense of having walked into a darkened room and lost his bearings.
