The old lighthouse, their childhood haven, stood silhouetted against the stormy sky. He’d driven for hours, a desperate pilgrimage to the place where their friendship began. He’d finally found her.

She seemed to be looking through him. The wind howled around them, mirroring the turmoil in his chest. He’d shown her the carvings they made. He'd spoken of their shared secrets. She'd shown no sign of knowing.

He looked at the sea, and a tear splashed on his hand. The waves crashed, each one an echo of the memories that were lost to her. He turned and walked away, the silhouette of the lighthouse fading behind him, swallowed by the rising tide.
