The rejection letter was a paperweight now, its crisp edges a stark contrast to the way her fingers trembled as she held it. Sunlight, usually a welcome guest in her cramped apartment, seemed to glare through the window, highlighting the dust motes dancing in the air like mocking confetti. She’d spent three years, countless sleepless nights, pouring her heart onto the page, and for what? A polite form letter and a sense of utter emptiness that settled in her stomach like a lead weight. She ran a hand through her hair, the strands catching on her fingernails.

She made a cup of tea, the clatter of the kettle echoing in the silence. The steam, usually comforting, felt cloying, a physical manifestation of the knot that tightened in her chest. She couldn't bring herself to open the novel again.

She took the tea to the balcony, where the city buzzed with life. People laughed, cars honked, life continued. She wondered if the editor, the one who signed the rejection, ever felt the same ache, this hollow space inside where her hopes had resided. She felt a profound weariness, a deep-seated exhaustion.
